The most spectacular and festive time of the year – Diwali is here! With the food, family and festivities, Diwali is all about the experience of coming together, and the vibrant spectacle of colours and light. As the festival of lights illuminates the country, nearly a billion people in India and over the world celebrate this festival with their families and loved ones. On the darkest night of the year when the sky is lit up with fireworks and lamps Goddess Lakshmi is invoked, and she is invited to homes decorated with diyas and rangoli.

Throughout its history Indian art has paid a loving homage to Diwali and associated festivities, be it in the splendid Mughal paintings, Pahari miniatures, or the oleographs of Raja Ravi Varma. Every artist has reimagined the lights and splendour of this festival in his or her own way. This Diwali, we bring you an eclectic selection of artworks that reverberate with everything that makes it so special – divinity, lights, gold, and whole lot of colour.
