Biography

Poushali Das is a painter whose practice is deeply rooted in traditional methods, emphasizing the skill of the hand and the mastery of pigment. Over two decades of rigorous study, she has refined her technique through an intense engagement with Persian and Mughal miniature traditions, as well as the watercolour aesthetics of the Bengal School. Following in the footsteps of Baroda-based artist Nilima Sheikh, she draws from historical narratives, mythology, and folklore, transforming them into evocative visual tales. Her work seamlessly merges the past with contemporary sensibilities, creating intricate compositions that embody both precision and poetic storytelling.

She holds an M.F.A. in Painting from M.S. University, Baroda (2004) and a B.F.A. from Kala-Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan (2002). She has received several prestigious grants and fellowships, including the Raza Foundation Traveling Grant (2017) and the Junior Research Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India (2004-2006).

Her works are part of notable collections, including the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, Birla Academy, Akara Art, and Musashino Art University, Tokyo.
