Shiv Shankar

Works
Overview

Shiv's works explore the reassertion of his social identity within his locale, addressing themes of social imposition, dominance, defamation, and the aspiration for an egalitarian society. His focus lies on elements rooted in time, reflecting familial and societal settings in which individuals navigate their lives. Nostalgia plays a significant role in his work, particularly in relation to caste, which remains a stark "reality" in Bihar. The interplay of nostalgia and caste identity is central to his practice, beginning with his own caste, the "Yadav."

Historically, the Yadav community has been vocal about its struggles within the hierarchical caste system. While the Yadavs have gained political dominance in northern India, this visibility has often been accompanied by unjust defamation. Events like the Chara Ghotala by Lalu Yadav and the Rocky Yadav road rage case have fueled stereotypes, but such instances cannot scientifically or morally justify judging an entire caste. Shiv’s work seeks to challenge these biases, offering a nuanced reflection on caste, identity, and the narratives imposed upon marginalized communities.
