Kanchan Karjee

Kanchan Karjee (b. 16 September 1987) is a sculptor based in West Bengal. He completed his BFA in Sculpture from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, in 2013, followed by an MFA in Sculpture in 2015/16.

Karjee’s practice centres on the human figure, memory and the emotional experiences embedded within the body. His sculptures, often depicting children, draw from observations of everyday life and the experiences of growing up, bringing together innocence, vulnerability and psychological complexity. Working primarily with wood, alongside materials such as terracotta, iron, graphite and plaster, he approaches the figure as a repository of memories, feelings and aspirations.

Since beginning to exhibit in 2014, Karjee has participated in exhibitions across India and internationally, including presentations at the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Emami Chisel, Karnataka Lalithakala Academy and the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, among others. His work has also been shown at CIMA Awards, Art Explore, Alliance Française and Kalakriti Art Gallery, Hyderabad, where he has exhibited since 2018, including in Sands of Time II. He has received several awards and grants, including the Art Mondiale India Art Award and support from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation.
