Ravi Kumar Kashi
Born in Bengaluru in 1968, Ravikumar Kashi is a multidisciplinary artist, writer and educator whose practice spans painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, installation and artist’s books. He completed his BFA in Painting from the College of Fine Arts, Bengaluru, an MFA in Printmaking from M.S. University, Baroda, and a Master’s in English Literature from the University of Mysuru.
Kashi’s practice is driven by an interest in the mechanics of meaning-making and the ways in which images, materials and ideas interact. His works often bring together seemingly unrelated forms and references, encouraging viewers to look beyond the immediate visual image and consider layers of memory, association and interpretation. His engagement with handmade paper has become an important aspect of his practice. He studied papermaking at the Glasgow School of Art through a Charles Wallace India Trust Grant and later learnt traditional Korean Hanji papermaking in South Korea.
Kashi has exhibited extensively in India and internationally, participating in museum exhibitions, biennales, art fairs and curated shows. His works are held in collections including the National Gallery of Modern Art and Lalit Kala Akademi. He has received the National Award and awards from the Karnataka Lalit Kala Akademi. Alongside his art practice, he writes on art and visual culture in Kannada and English and lives and works in Bengaluru.
