Subrata Gangopadhyay
Subrata Gangopadhyay (b. 1959, Calcutta) is a prominent Indian painter known for his figurative works rooted in the tradition of modern realism. He graduated from the Government College of Art & Crafts, Calcutta, in 1980, securing First Class First in Painting (Life, Nature and Murals).
Gangopadhyay’s paintings are characterised by strong, fluid lines, vibrant colour and a distinctive sense of movement. His subjects often include women, dancers, musicians, festivals and everyday human experiences. His celebrated works on Indian dance, particularly the Rhythmic Harmony series, bring together expressive movement, dynamic compositions and a rich interplay of colour.
His practice combines the discipline of academic realism with an expressive approach to brushwork, ranging from finely rendered figures to bold impasto passages. His skills as a draftsman were further developed during his years as a Senior Artist with the Ananda Bazar Group of Publications, where he worked before becoming a full-time independent artist.
Over a career spanning several decades, Gangopadhyay has exhibited widely in India and internationally. His works are held in collections including the Victoria Memorial, Kolkata, the Chennai Museum, Mayo College, the Taj Group and RPG Enterprises, as well as in private collections in India and abroad.
