Biography
Bijon Choudhury (1931–2012) was an important figure in the development of modern Indian art, particularly within the Bengal art movement. Born in Faridpur, Bengal (now Bangladesh), he studied at the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, and later graduated from the Dacca Art College. In 1964, he co-founded the Calcutta Painters group, which sought to move beyond the established traditions of the Bengal School.
Choudhury’s practice is distinguished by expressive figurative forms, strong lines and a deeply humanistic approach. His paintings draw upon Bengali folk and urban traditions, Kalighat imagery, mythology, poetry and everyday life, while engaging with modernist influences. His works often carry narrative and social dimensions without becoming merely illustrative. Working across oil, acrylic, ink, watercolour and mixed media, Choudhury developed a distinctive visual language that brought together folk sensibilities and modernist expression. His legacy remains significant to the history of post-Independence Indian art.
