Learn about Cheriyal and Bidri artforms
Very often, folk and indigenous art is framed as something fixed in the past. Living Lineages, an exhibit in Hyderabad, argues otherwise. Bringing together works by Cheriyal scroll practitioners and Bidri artisans, Bhuri Bai, Balu Jivya Mashe, Venkat Raman Shyam, the exhibition showcases traditions that continue to evolve through use, memory and individual interpretation. Storytelling runs through the show, whether in the symbolic geometry of Warli painting, the narratives in Cheriyal scrolls, or the dense patterning of Bidriware. These pieces create dialogue about image-making as inherited knowledge, shaped as much by community as by the artist’s hand. It is also a useful reminder that these practices are not relics, but active and changing visual languages.
