Hyderabad’s Kalakriti Art Gallery has unveiled two compelling solo exhibitions that invite viewers into deeply personal yet universally resonant artistic worlds. Mirror of Vision by Bratin Khan and A Room for Refuge by Anupama Alias Anil opened on October 5, 2025, marking significant milestones for both artists as they present bodies of work rooted in autobiography, memory, and the exploration of transitional spaces.
Bratin Khan: A Luminous Dialogue with Tradition
Mirror of Vision represents Bratin Khan’s first solo exhibition in Hyderabad, introducing the city’s art community to his distinctive visual language shaped by the Bengal School of Art and his training at Santiniketan. Working primarily in tempera, Khan creates luminous canvases where graceful figures appear radiant against nature’s flowing forms.
Khan’s practice reflects an ongoing dialogue with nature, tradition, and personal memory. His works feature mythological and religious imagery—Buddha, Krishna, legendary icons—alongside elegant female figures and lotus flowers, all rendered with refined linework and a carefully considered palette. The artist’s curvaceous, languid figures exist in natural habitats that seem to glow from within, creating spaces where the viewer can contemplate the intersection of the personal and the universal.
“It is a proud moment to host artist Bratin Khan’s first solo exhibition with us,” says Gallerist Rekha Lahoti. “His practice, rooted in tradition yet evolving with a contemporary sensibility, resonates deeply with our vision. We are confident this thoughtfully curated show will be received with great appreciation in the city.”
Anupama Alias Anil: The Studio as Sanctuary
A Room for Refuge takes its title from Anupama Alias Anil’s studio—the vital space where her work comes into being. The exhibition presents an interconnected body of paintings, sculptures, and assemblages that explore transitional moments in women’s lives, particularly the often-overlooked middle years.
Anupama’s practice is deeply autobiographical, revealing inner thoughts, fears, apprehensions, aspirations, and beliefs. Her female protagonists inhabit ambiguous environments, as seen in works like Hidden Meaning of the Last Meal, where the artist re-visualizes and re-envisions her idea of self. Drawing inspiration from the biblical creation of Eve from Adam’s rib, Anupama has developed a visual vocabulary centered on the rib cage and human anatomy, embarking on what she describes as a metaphysical journey of self-discovery.
The artist’s focus on the “in-betweenness” of existence—those transitional, vulnerable moments that define identity—creates a powerful macro-metaphor for understanding the fluctuations and implied desires of womanhood.
Regarding the exhibition, Lahoti notes: “From being our scholarship artist at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi and to pursuing a French residency, her growth has been remarkable. This show has been carefully planned, and we are eager to see the city’s response to this significant debut.”
A Shared Vision: Personal Memory as Collective Experience
While working in different mediums and exploring distinct themes, both Khan and Anupama share a common approach: their works invite reflection and create in-between spaces where personal memory expands into shared, collective cultural experience. Whether through Khan’s luminous tempera paintings or Anupama’s multimedia assemblages, both artists transform intimate observations into universal explorations of human experience.
These exhibitions showcase Kalakriti Art Gallery’s expansive 4,500 square foot space, designed to stimulate artistic and curatorial practices in Hyderabad. As a hub for South Asian contemporary art, the gallery enables cultural exchange throughout South India while promoting diverse artistic perspectives beyond traditional paint and canvas.
