Biography
Dilip Ranade (b. 1950) is a significant contemporary Indian artist whose practice brings together painting, drawing and sculpture. Born in 1950, he studied Drawing and Painting at the Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai, graduating in 1971. He later received an Indo-US Sub-Commission grant to study Museology and worked with the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya in Mumbai.
Ranade’s work is rooted in a close observation of everyday life, yet transforms familiar objects, figures and situations into imaginative and often unexpected compositions. His paintings and drawings explore themes of memory, identity, time and perception, often moving between the real and the imagined. Humour, irony and a dreamlike quality are recurring elements in his visual language. Through simplified forms and carefully constructed spaces, Ranade encourages viewers to reconsider the ordinary and discover its hidden possibilities. His practice reflects an individual engagement with modern and contemporary Indian art, while maintaining a strong sense of personal observation and imagination.
