Biography

Balagopalan, born in Kasaragod, the northernmost coastal district of Kerala, grew up immersed in the region’s rich cultural heritage, renowned for its vibrant ritual art forms such as Theyyam, Poorakkali, and Kolkali. This early exposure to tradition and performance continues to inform his artistic sensibility. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the prestigious Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts (CAVA), Mysore University, and is currently based in New Delhi, India.

 

Bala’s diverse practice has been showcased in numerous exhibitions, projects, and residencies across India and abroad. Notable participations include Kalakriti Art Residency, Kalakriti Art Gallery, Hyderabad (2020); Signature in the Image, curated by Pranamita Borgohain and Monica Jain, Art Centrix Space, New Delhi (2020); CRACK International Art Camp, Kushtia, Bangladesh (2019); and Future Collaborations: The Panorama of Resistance \[Prelude], curated by Premjish Achari, Khoj International Artists’ Association and Goethe-Institut, New Delhi (2018).

 

He was part of Project Tihar at the Tihar Art Festival (2017), Inquiries on the Contemporary at the Italian Embassy Cultural Centre, New Delhi (2016), the SAARC Artists Camp in Colombo, Sri Lanka (2012), and held a solo exhibition, Epiphany, at Apparao Art Galleries, The Lodhi, New Delhi (2017). His work reflects an engagement with cultural memory, community, and contemporary discourse.
