Tanmay Santra was born in West Bengal in 1969, and earned a B. Sc. from University of Calcutta in 1991. He obtained his BVA from the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship, Kolkata (1999); followed by an MFA from Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan (2002). He received Junior Fellowship from Ministry of Tourism & Culture, New Delhi (2002); and ‘Artist Dinkar Thopate Award’ from Tilak Smarak Trust, Pune, 2005.
During an artistic practice of over two decades, he has had two Solo shows; and his group exhibitions include ‘Mapping Periphery & Centre: A Pan-India Dialogue curated by Lina Vincent, at Art Galleries 1 -4, Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath Campus, Bengaluru, May 2026; ’ ‘Origin Story’, curated by Satyajit Dave, presented by Kalakriti Art Gallery, at Sameksha Art Gallery, New Delhi, January 2026; ‘Barren-scape’, curated by Soma Bhowmik, Maya Art Space, Kolkata, December 2025; ‘ A tribute to Mani da’ curated by Prof. Dilip Mitra and Prof. Pankaj Panwar at Santiniketan Society of Visual Art & Design (SSVAD), Santiniketan, May-June 2025; ‘Whispering Rocks: The Deccan Legacy’ curated by Dr. Avani Rao Gandra, Forestrek Park, Hyderabad, April 2025; ‘Journey-3’ presented by Art Circle, in Chittagong, Bangladesh, November 2024; ‘Time Warp’ curated by Lina Vincent, at Gallery Veda, Chennai, January 2021.
A number of his articles and artworks were published in several printed magazines and online blogs; and he did several artworks for book covers in the last two decades. He has been teaching fine arts at Sarojini Naidu School of Arts & Communication, University of Hyderabad since 2007.
