Babu Xavier

Babu Xavier (b. 1960, Kerala) is one of India's most distinctive contemporary artists, celebrated for his vibrant visual language and imaginative compositions. A self-taught artist, he developed an independent artistic practice that has earned him widespread recognition in India and internationally. His first solo exhibition was held at Kalapeedom, Kochi, in 1984, followed by numerous solo and group exhibitions at leading galleries and institutions, including Pundole Art Gallery, Mumbai; Gallerie Ganesha, New Delhi; Sakshi Gallery, Chennai; and venues in Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. A recipient of the Kerala Lalit Kala Akademi Award (1990), Xavier's works are held in prestigious public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Peabody Essex Museum, USA. Characterized by luminous colours, fantastical forms, and symbolic imagery, his paintings explore themes of nature, mythology, spirituality, and contemporary human existence.
