Ramananda Bandyopadhyay

Biography

Ramananda Bandyopadhyay (b. 1936) is a distinguished Indian modern artist and an important figure in the Bengal School tradition. Born in Birbhum, West Bengal, he studied Fine Arts at Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan, graduating in 1957 under the guidance of the celebrated artist and teacher Nandalal Bose. His training at Santiniketan shaped his deep engagement with Indian artistic traditions, folk culture, mythology and the rhythms of everyday life.

Bandyopadhyay’s paintings are characterised by lyrical simplicity, graceful lines and a distinctive palette of reds, browns, greens and whites. Drawing inspiration from Indian mythology, literature and the lives of rural and middle-class communities, he transforms ordinary subjects into images of quiet dignity and beauty. His works often depict Hindu deities, village life, women and scenes of everyday existence, blending traditional Indian aesthetics with a personal and contemporary sensibility.

Alongside painting, Bandyopadhyay has worked in drawing, sculpture and writing. He has exhibited extensively in India and abroad, with a retrospective at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, in 2003. He received the National Academy Awards from the Lalit Kala Akademi four times and was honoured with the Abanindranath Puraskar by the Government of West Bengal in 2000. He lives and works in Kolkata.
