MELTING THE COSMOS
Shivarama Chary and his art has evolved in the past few years and moved into a new trajectory. The inspiration is more and more from within, examining emotions and feelings with a singular determination. The object of this examination often is the reality of the self and its content. In contrast with his earlier work, where such an interrogation led to an abiding engagement with the world around, the current work makes him gaze upwards in search for a cosmic order. The search for a cosmic order could be the enemy of creativity and yet there is the impulse, ever so strong, that makes him revert his artistic gaze elsewhere. Realizing that an order of this kind might just be an elaborate fiction, he uses his imagination in order to reorder and fabricate a cosmic order that is entirely his own. In doing so, he brings to it beauty and truth, lacing it with gentleness and empathy. He realizes that the rigidity, certitude and finality of a cosmic order are not worthy of the vocation of an artist. Rather, it is instances of fleeting happiness, slivers of memories of the past, and the need to cherish this moment that drives his artistic imagination. It is not deliberate thought that makes him a sculptor. On the contrary, it is imagination that defines him but also empowers him to create, classify and name the world. He asserts powerfully that the world is what it is because of imagination and not because of some preordained plan. He melts the cosmos with his imagination.
