Dhruti Mahajan
Dhruti Mahajan (b. 1981, Amalner, Maharashtra) is a contemporary artist based in Pune. Raised in Akot, Maharashtra, she initially trained and practiced as an advocate before leaving the legal profession in 2010 to pursue art fulltime. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Bharati Vidyapeeth's College of Fine Arts, Pune, in 2016.
Dhruti is known for her minimal geometric abstract works, which reflect her commitment to a minimalist way of living. By reducing visual elements to their essentials, her practice explores clarity, balance, and quiet contemplation. The clean lines and geometric forms in her work mirror the streamlined, functional aesthetic that informs both her artistic practice and everyday life.
After working extensively with canvas for several years, Dhruti shifted her practice in 2024 to explore the expressive possibilities of paper as a primary medium. Most of her recent works are created through thousands of meticulously hand-made pinpricks on paper. Using repetition, geometry, and minimal forms, she investigates themes of time, patience, and the interplay of light, shadow, and texture. Each work is slow, meditative, and process-driven, inviting viewers to engage with the subtle details that gradually emerge from the paper's surface.
Her work has been exhibited in numerous group exhibitions across Pune, Mumbai, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, LehLadakh, and other cities. In December 2023, she presented her debut solo exhibition at Gallery Kalakriti, Hyderabad.
Dhruti has received several prestigious awards, including the His Excellency The Governor of Maharashtra Award and Gold Medal at the 128th Bombay Art Society Annual Exhibition (Mumbai, 2020), the 58th Maharashtra State Art Award (Professional Category, Mumbai, 2018), the Prafulla Dahanukar Art Foundation City Award (Akola, 2017), Second Prize at the All India Women Artists' Contemporary Art Exhibition (Artscapes, Chandigarh, 2016), and Second Prize at the 29th All India Lokmanya Tilak & V. V. Oak Art Exhibition (Late Shri Jayantrao Tilak Award, Pune, 2016), among many others. She is also a recipient of both the Junior Fellowship and the Senior Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
Dhruti Mahajan lives and works in Pune, Maharashtra.
